This HIV test kit is designed to detect if you have the human immunodeficiency virus and should be performed under the supervision of a medical professional.

By analysing a small sample of your blood taken from your finger, you can now test for HIV at home with help from a medical professional.

Our at-home test kit has a very high accuracy rate (more than 99%) and gives results in 15-30 minutes. A negative result may provide a great deal of comfort to anyone who is concerned that they or their partner may have HIV.

If the result suggests that you may be HIV positive, it is highly recommended that you consult your GP for confirmation, counselling and to discuss treatment options.

Understanding HIV and its common symptoms:

Identifying HIV Symptoms Early:

  • The Quiet Period: HIV can be dormant with no symptoms for extended periods, highlighting why regular self-testing is vital.
  • Progressed Symptoms: Without treatment, HIV can progress to cause significant weight loss, ongoing cough, or night sweats.

Our HIV Testing Kit contains everything you need to test your blood for the HIV virus. There is no need to send off the sample to a laboratory.

Inside the box you will find:

  • 1 x alcohol swab
  • 1 x lancet
  • 1 x sterile gauze
  • 1 x pipette
  • 1 x test cassette
  • 1 x tube of diluent buffer solution
  • 1 x set of instructions

HIV can affect anyone who is sexually active or who shares needles when taking drugs. This kit can help anyone concerned about HIV to obtain a rapid result.

HIV attacks the body’s immune system, and if treatment is not sought it can lead to AIDS. While HIV currently has no cure, it can be controlled and medications can help people with the virus to live a long, healthy life.

If your lifestyle choices – coupled with some of the common HIV symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes, fevers, rashes and muscle aches – are making you worried that you may have HIV, this test can help to provide an answer.

Additionally, this test may be taken by couples who have no symptoms but who want to be sure that they do not pass the virus on to their partner before they start having unprotected sex or sharing needles.

The result of your HIV Self Test will be visible in 15-30 minutes and will show you whether HIV has been detected or not.

If HIV is detected, the test cassette will show a positive result – this means that HIV antibodies in your blood have been detected in the blood sample tested.

An HIV blood test is very accurate, but not infallible. If you do have a positive result, we strongly recommend visiting your GP to discuss taking a second test and to understand treatment options.

This Kit is for self-testing and is designed for ease of use. However, it is important to carefully follow the instructions provided to ensure accuracy. While this kit is approved for self-testing, we recommend that if you have any doubts or difficulties with the procedure, seek assistance from a medical professional.

It is important that you receive a test result that is as accurate as possible and if HIV is detected you seek appropriate help.

How do I interpret my results?

Your reading should clearly show whether or not HIV antibodies in your blood were detected in your sample. The presence of antibodies indicates the presence of the virus.

For a NEGATIVE result (i.e. HIV-1 and HIV-2 have NOT been detected), NO red lines will appear in the test zone (1 and 2) within 30 minutes. A red line will ONLY appear in the control zone (C). Note that a result of this nature does not completely exclude the possibility of an HIV infection.

A POSITIVE result (i.e. the test indicates you ARE HIV positive) will be denoted by the appearance of one red line in the control zone (C) PLUS one or two additional red lines of any intensity in the test zone (1 and 2). This indicates the detection of either HIV-1 or HIV-2.

If NO red line appears in the control zone (C), the test should be considered INVALID – even if there is a red line (or two) in the test zone (1 and 2). Please discard the test cassette and perform another test with a new kit.

Please note that this HIV test has a built-in procedural control that demonstrates assay validity. When a red line appears on the control zone (C), it indicates that the test is operating correctly.

Gathering and testing your sample

  1. This self-test kit is designed for easy use at home or in a personal setting. It requires a small blood sample from your fingertip. While the kit is user-friendly, it is essential to follow the instructions carefully to ensure accurate results. If assistance is needed, it’s recommended to seek guidance from a medical professional.
  2. Before unsealing the pouch, allow the plastic test cassette to reach room temperature (4-30C). Use immediately once opened.
  3. Start by thoroughly cleaning the area to be lanced (pricked) with the alcohol pad provided.
  4. Squeeze the end of the fingertip with your other hand and prick it with the sterile lancet provided.
  5. Using the sterile gauze provided, wipe away the first drop of blood. You should collect the sample from the second drop.
  6. Use the pipette to collect blood from your fingertip (it uses suction to draw blood into the tube). Make sure that the test cassette is on a flat surface and immediately dispense one drop (30-40 μL) onto the sample well (S) of the plastic testing cassette.
  7. When the specimen is completely absorbed, slowly add one drop of the diluent buffer solution vertically into the same sample well. Do not allow the buffer bottle to touch the sample well.
  8. Take care not to spill blood or the buffer solution on the observation window.
  9. Observe the result between 15 and 30 minutes after the diluent buffer is added.

HIV originated in Africa, most likely when humans hunting chimpanzees with a very similar virus ate the animals’ meat. While there is no cure for the condition, advances in medical science mean it can now be treated.

The HIV virus damages cells in the immune system and weakens your ability to fight off other infections and diseases.

It is not the same as AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), which is the name given to describe a number of serious infections and illnesses that can arise if you have HIV.

AIDS, therefore, cannot be transmitted from person to person, whereas the HIV virus can.

HIV is highly infectious, and because it can lead to AIDS, which can be fatal, people who are worried they may have it are strongly encouraged to get tested. In fact, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in the US recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested at least once.

The CDC also states that if you are a sexually active gay or bisexual man, frequent testing (every 3-6 months) can be of benefit. This is especially true if you have a large number of sexual partners.

Remember that if you are diagnosed with HIV, there are now a variety of treatment options that can allow you to live a long, healthy life. In the UK, people with HIV can not only get advice and treatment from their medical practitioner but from a number of support organisations such as the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Your local sexual health clinic may offer support and guidance as well.
